Elastic Thread
Elastic Thread
• Use:
For machine-sewn smocking (also known as shirring), which is used to create stretch and a gathered, textured appearance on garments like dresses and tops.
• How it works:
Elastic thread is wound into the bobbin and used as the lower looper thread in a sewing machine. As you sew, the elastic thread collects the fabric into pleats, creating a fitted, stretchy effect.
Choosing the Right Thread
- For hand smocking: Use a slightly heavier-than-usual thread, such as embroidery floss or pearl cotton.
- For machine smocking: Use elastic sewing thread.
- For a good fit: Elastic thread offers desirable firmness, stretch, and elasticity, making it a great choice for creating garments with a fitted appeal.
Tips for Elastic Thread Smocking
- Bobbin tension: Wind the elastic thread onto the bobbin loosely, to avoid too much tension.
- Tension settings: Decrease the needle thread tension on your sewing machine.
- Stitching: As you sew multiple seams, the fabric will contract, so stretch the fabric while sewing.
- Continuous seams: Ensure you have enough elastic thread on the bobbin to complete each seam.
